Projected College Football Playoff Rankings After Week 7

Projected College Football Playoff Rankings After Week 7

With the season now at its midpoint, the college football landscape is looking a lot different than it did in August. Powerhouses have stumbled, surprise teams have surged, and the national picture is more muddled and intriguing than ever. Keeping all the upsets in mind, ESPN has laid out a snapshot of who holds the edge for the College Football Playoffs.

12. Tennessee Volunteers (5-1)

The Vols are hanging in. They lack a marquee win and have been erratic. Their 34-31 win over Arkansas was a battle, and while their path to a high seed is less flashy than many ahead, they’ve shown resilience.

11. LSU Tigers (5-1)

LSU’s defense continues to stand out, and their only loss is to No. 6 Ole Miss. However, offensive hiccups and a lack of consistency could hold them back from climbing higher unless they deliver a big finish.

10. Oklahoma Sooners (5-1)

Oklahoma’s 23-6 loss to Texas raises concern. QB John Mateer, just recovered from hand surgery, struggled (3 interceptions, no TDs) in the Red River Rivalry. Their nonconference win over Michigan remains valuable, but inconsistency and a challenging upcoming schedule are hurdles.

9. Texas Tech Red Raiders (6-0)

Texas Tech is riding momentum, with recent convincing wins against Big 12 foes and depth proving itself. Their rise is fueled by strong NIL backing and big performances. A 42-17 victory over Kansas turned heads. However, injury to quarterback Behren Morton clouds their ceiling.

8. Oregon Ducks (5-1)

Oregon’s rough Week 7 dropped them five spots in the rankings. Their mistake-laden performance against Indiana, with seven penalties and sloppy execution, hurt their standing. However, their résumé still shows grit.

7. Georgia Bulldogs (5-1)

Georgia’s record isn’t perfect, but they’ve looked strong recently. The Dawgs remain among the country’s elite, though they’ll fight for positioning behind Alabama due to head-to-head tiebreakers. Big games ahead against Ole Miss and in-state rivals will help define their path.

6. Ole Miss Rebels (6-0)

Ole Miss has impressed by winning tight games and showing depth behind quarterback Trinidad Chambliss. But their undefeated run remains under the microscope. Their 24-21 win over Washington State was far from dominant, and looming games against Georgia and Oklahoma will test their legitimacy.

5. Alabama Crimson Tide (5-1)

After an opening loss, Bama has won five straight against strong opponents. Their tight road win at Missouri (27-24) showed grit. Ty Simpson’s growth at quarterback and the program’s familiarity with playoff scrutiny keep the Tide a top contender.

4. Texas A&M Aggies (6-0)

The Aggies continue to look steady in a shaky SEC environment. In Week 7, they handled Florida (34-17), balancing a strong running game with competent quarterback play. The question is: Can they survive a brutal remaining stretch of road games?

3. Indiana Hoosiers (6-0)

The Hoosiers have drawn eyes with a big road upset at Oregon (30-20) and have backed that up with gritty defensive showings. Their remaining wins against lighter opponents may raise questions, but their momentum is undeniable.

2. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)

2. Miami Hurricanes (5-0)

A strong nonconference résumé, including wins over Notre Dame and Florida, backs Miami’s unbeaten stretch. Though they’ve yet to leave Florida, their body of work is solid, and they sit in striking distance of the top spot.

1. Ohio State Buckeyes (6-0)

The Buckeyes have looked balanced and efficient, blending a stifling defense with a mistake-free season from quarterback Julian Sayin. Ohio State jumped back to No. 1 after a 34-16 win over Illinois, in which the impressive defense held Illinois to 294 yards and forced turnovers.

This Week 7 projection illustrates just how volatile the playoff chase remains. Ohio State’s return to No. 1 makes sense given the consistency, but the rise of Indiana and the steadiness of Texas A&M show that the No. 1 seed is far from locked in. As surprising losses pile up around the country, this top-12 list will likely shift again, and fa
