The AFC North remains one of the most competitive divisions in football, with every team showing both strengths and weaknesses through the early part of the season. Each week brings a shift in momentum, as injuries, standout performances, and critical mistakes change the outlook for all four teams. Power rankings help put teams into categories based on their performance so far throughout the season.

1. Ravens

The Ravens have looked nothing short of dominant in all 8 quarters this season, except the fourth quarter against Buffalo. Lamar Jackson is proving yet again that he is a top quarterback in the NFL with very few flaws. The defense has looked amazing outside of that 4th quarter against the Bills, and they were performing the entire game against the Browns.

2. Bengals

Bengals Ja’Marr Chase (1) catches a pass for a touchdown during their game against the Steelers at Acrisure Stadium on Saturday January 4, 2025. The Bengals lead the game at halftime with a score of 13-7.

The Bengals clearly have a major issue at quarterback now that Joe Burrow will be getting surgery and will be out for 3+ months. The Bengals offense looked like they did not skip a beat when Burrow came out; obviously, they are a worse team. Regardless, the Bengals still sit at 2-0 and at the top of the AFC North record-wise. The defense is still shaky but has shown signs of improvement.

3. Steelers

After the first two games of the season, there is a noticeable drop off from 2 to 3 in the power rankings. The Steelers have looked slow and unimpressive defensively for many reasons. They have made big plays to keep them in games, but the inconsistency will ultimately hurt them. The Steelers will have to fix a lot on both sides of the ball if they want to remain competitive in any way in the AFC North.

4. Browns

The Browns are clearly the worst team in the division. While they have strengths that do not make them a complete mess, they have obvious issues. The Browns defense has shown signs of being elite, but is not completely there yet. There were times against the Ravens where they looked great, but their incompetence in the secondary has held them back. The offense has and always will be what holds the Browns back for at least this season, until they get a real quarterback and weapons.

The AFC North is an always-changing division with complexities nobody can really understand. There are injuries every week that will change the outlook on the division throughout the weeks this season. There have already been major changes in the NFL as a whole; the AFC North will definitely see a lot of change this season. The Ravens have been #1 for the first two weeks of the season, and there is no sure change happening any time soon. This will be a fun season to see unfold.
