MLB Power Rankings: Juan Soto’s Hustle Suddenly A Concern?

The 2025 MLB season is approaching the summer months and three teams have already fire their managers. Is it too late for the Orioles to turn their season around? Here are the Top 30 teams in baseball.

1. Los Angeles Dodgers (29-19)

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

A four-game losing streak has prevented the Dodgers from increasing their lead in the NL West, but the reigning champs remain atop the best division in baseball. In Monday’s loss to the Diamondbacks, the Dodgers swung at 42 pitches against starter Brandon Pfaadt and didn’t swing and miss once. Incredibly, they hit .000 on balls in play — all three hits were solo home runs. Aside from some bad luck, LA’s lineup has done its part. However, the pitching staff is currently depleted and is surrendering an alarming amount of runs. During the four-game skid, LA’s staff has allowed 32 runs.

2. Detroit Tigers (31-17)

Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

As we approach the summer months, the Detroit Tigers have the best record in baseball. Detroit playing like a playoff team is not a surprise, but nobody would have thought it would own the best record nearly 50 games into the season. The biggest shock, however, has been the play of Javy Báez. At one time, Báez was a star with the Cubs — helping the team win the World Series in 2016 and finishing second for MVP in ’18. In his first three years with the Tigers, Báez slashed .221/.262/.347 with 32 HRs — fans were calling for his release. Báez appeared to be washed, but he has turned back the clock this season. Báez leads the Tigers with a 1.7 WAR and is headed towards an All-Star nod if he continues at this pace.

3. San Diego Padres (27-18)

Denis Poroy-Imagn Images

With the Dodgers losing four in a row, the Padres had an opportunity to take over first-place in the NL West. Instead, the club has gone on a skid of its own — losing three in a row and 5-of-7 overall. Last weekend, San Diego was swept at home by the Mariners. The offense was stifled by Seattle’s elite staff. Across three games, the Padres scored three runs on 23 hits. The Pads are on the road this week to take on the Blue Jays and the Braves.

4. New York Mets (29-19)

John Jones-Imagn Images

The past few days have put Juan Soto in the spotlight for all the wrong reasons. The Mets big offseason acquisition is off to a slow start by his standards, but his performance over the weekend and on Monday has resulted in questions being asked. Last weekend, Soto returned to the Bronx for the first time since leaving the Yankees. Not only did he go 1-for-10, but he seemed unhappy all weekend and notably failed to hustle on a ground ball in the 8th inning of a 2-2 game. On Monday, Soto failed to hustle out of the box on a hit that went off the Green Monster and he settled for a single. 1-4 over their last five, the Mets have fallen into second-place in the NL East.

5. Philadelphia Phillies (29-18)

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

The new leaders in the NL East, the Philadelphia Phillies. A five-game skid late last month — which included a sweep in Queens — dropped Philadelphia to 13-13. The club has lost one series since that sweep, nor has it lost consecutive games during its current 16-5 tear. As expected, Philadelphia is benefitting from its strong starting rotation. Zack Wheeler, newcomer Jesús Luzardo, and Cristopher Sánchez are pitching up their potential. Offensively, Kyle Schwarber has 16 HR and recently joined the 300 HR club.

6. San Francisco Giants (28-20)

Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images

When did Wilmer Flores become a reliable run producer? Through 48 games, Flores leads baseball with 42 RBI and is also pacing the Giants with 10 homers. Last week began with a competitive series with the rival Diamondbacks. The host Giants went 1-2, with each loss coming by one run. However, the club got back on track over the weekend by sweeping the Athletics. Before sweeping the A’s, San Francisco had lost 5-of-6.

7. Chicago Cubs (28-20)

David Banks-Imagn Images

The Cubs have turned things around following a 2-5 stretch. After dropping consecutive series to the Giants and Mets, respectively, the Cubs are 5-2 with series wins over the lowly Marlins and White Sox. Chicago had an opportunity to sweep the Marlins at Wrigley, but its bats were silenced in the finale — a 3-1 loss. However, the lineup wasted no time getting back on track as it hung 13 runs on the White Sox in the following game. The Cubs swept the Sox with ease (13-3, 7-3, 6-2).

8. New York Yankees (27-19)

Wendell Cruz-Imagn Images

The Yankees are the only team above .500 in the AL East and are currently 4.5 games ahead of the rival Red Sox. New York is 8-3 over its last 11 games and has won four series in a row. Impressively, three of the victorious series were over teams that figure to compete for the postseason — San Diego, Seattle, New York. After hosting Texas to start the week, the Yankees will head to Colorado to start a nine-game road trip…one that concludes with a World Series rematch against the Dodgers.

9. Seattle Mariners (27-19)

Kamil Krzaczynski-Imagn Images

Seattle made one of the biggest statements of the weekend as it swept the Padres in San Diego. Seattle’s impressive performance came on the heels of a disastrous homestand. The M’s were swept by the Blue Jays and dropped two-of-three to the Yankees. Overall, Seattle went 3-7 over 10 games. However, a 5-1 stretch has resulted in a 2.5-game lead in the AL West. The pitching staff has lived up to the hype during the current run, as well. The staff has allowed just one run in all five wins. In the one defeat, the Yankees scratched a mere three runs.

10. Arizona Diamondbacks (26-22)

Gary A. Vasquez-Imagn Images

This is a team that nobody wants to see get hot. Arizona hasn’t put it all together thus far and has hovered around .500 for much of the season. Now, the D-Backs are four games above .500 thanks to a 5-2 stretch. Last week, Arizona won two-of-three in San Francisco before returning home and going 2-1 against the terrible Rockies. On Monday, the Snakes raced out to an early 7-0 lead over the first-place Dodgers in an eventual 9-5 win. Despite their inconsistent start, the D-Backs enter play Tuesday only 3.0 GB of Los Angeles.

11. Minnesota Twins (26-21)

Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

The hottest team in baseball, Minnesota now finds itself in second-place in the AL Central. The Twins won 13 games in a row to get back into the thick of the playoff picture, but their deficit in the Central didn’t change much. Before the streak began, Minnesota was 7.0 GB of first. Following their first loss in 14 games, the Twins were 5.0 GB. During the streak, Minnesota went 6-0 against the freefalling Orioles and also swept the Giants. This week features an important series against Cleveland and Kansas City.

12. Atlanta Braves (24-23)

Bob DeChiara-Imagn Images

From 0-7 to 24-23. The Braves were kicked in the teeth to open the season, but their response has been impressive. Last week consisted of a 3-1 series win against Washington and a two-game-to-one triumph in Boston. Spencer Strider is on the verge of returning from the IL and former MVP Ronald Acuna Jr. is currently on a rehab assignment in the Minors. Only 5.0 GB of Philadelphia in the East, the Braves are poised to make a run in the coming months.

13. St. Louis Cardinals (27-21)

Jeff Curry-Imagn Images

Not many people expected the Cardinals to compete in 2025. After starting the season 12-17, St. Louis looked like it was ready to prove the doubters right. However, the Cards have rattled off a 15-4 tear and now trail the Cubs by just one game. St. Louis’ defense has been the best in baseball and its pitching staff has been great during the current run. Over the last 14 games, the Cards have allowed four or more runs three times — both losses have come by a 2-1 score. The Cards opened the week with a dominant 11-4 win over Detroit.

14. Kansas City Royals (27-22)

Sergio Estrada-Imagn Images

The Royals are going to be in a battle for the AL Central crown throughout the season. The top four teams are separated by just five games and currently hold four of the six-best records in the AL. KC has overcome its poor start — a 1-8 stretch dropped the club to 8-14 — and is looking like the team that upset Baltimore in last year’s WC series. The Royals went 16-2 before last week’s setback. After losing two-of-three at home to the Red Sox, KC went 1-2 against both the Astros and Cardinals. Two wins in a row have cut Detroit’s lead to 4.5 games.

15. Cleveland Guardians (25-21)

Jesse Johnson-Imagn Images

Despite holding the sixth-best record in the American League, the Guardians are in fourth-place in the Central. Cleveland started last week with back-t0-back shutouts against the Brewers, but it was unable to build on its momentum and lost four in a row to end the week. A 9-5 loss to Milwaukee in the finale was followed by a sweep in Cincinnati. Cleveland’s bats were silenced by the Reds in the last two games, as well. The Guards scored one run on both Saturday and Sunday. Overall, Cleveland has lost 6-of-8.

16. Texas Rangers (25-23)

Tim Heitman-Imagn Images

7-3 over their last 10 games, the Rangers sit in third-place in the AL West — 3.0 GB of Seattle and a half-game back of the rival Astros. Two weekends ago, the Rangers pummeled the Tigers on consecutive days to win the series in Detroit. The momentum carried over into last week with a sweep at home over the Rockies. Then, Texas opened a four-game set against Houston with a 1-0 win. A loss in Game 2 was followed by a win in Game 3. With a chance to win the series on Sunday, Texas led 3-0 entering the 7th inning but ultimately lost, 4-3. Texas’ starting rotation has been great — now it just needs the lineup to come alive.

17. Houston Astros (25-22)

Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

The two Texas clubs are nearly identical clubs thus far. Like the Rangers, Houston has been carried by its pitching — highlighted by the sensational Hunter Brown — while the lineup has been below-average. Brown has announced himself as a Cy Young candidate through eight starts. Brown is 6-2 with an impressive 1.43 ERA and 0.83 WHIP. The longer the ‘Stros stick around in the West, the harder they will be to put away.

18. Cincinnati Reds (25-24)

Charles LeClaire-Imagn Images

Cincinnati has been an inconsistent team all season, but last week had to be maddening for the clubhouse and fans. Playing host to the White Sox to start a six-game homestand, the Reds dropped the first two games of the series while producing a meager three runs. A 7-1 win in the finale prevented a sweep, however, and the Reds were able to build on the momentum. Impressively, Cincy swept the visiting Guardians and outscored the interstate rival 12-6. On Monday, the Reds knocked off Pittsburgh 7-1. The staff has allowed one run in four of the past five games…that will work.

19. Boston Red Sox (24-25)

Eric Canha-Imagn Images

Where would the Red Sox be without Alex Bregman? In his first year with the club after a nine-year run in Houston, Bregman has played as well as anybody in the American League not named Aaron Judge. The third baseman is slashing .303/.386/.569 with 11 HR and 35 RBI. Aside from Bregman, the two players helping the most are Rafael Devers — the man Bregman replaced at 3B — and Wilyer Abreu. Devers is batting .403 with a 1.168 OPS in May. Abreu’s 11 HR match Bregman for the team lead and he has produced a 1.9 WAR. The Sox went 1-5 last week against Detroit and Atlanta, but began this week with a win over the Mets.

20. Athletics (22-26)

Dennis Lee-Imagn Images

The Athletics are beginning to slide after a strong start to the season. As the competition improved, the club’s struggles emerged. The A’s have lost four series in a row — with all four coming against teams that would be in the postseason if the regular season ended today (Mariners, Yankees, Dodgers, Giants). The A’s kicked off last week with a dominant 11-1 win over the Dodgers but went on to lose the next two games by a combined 28-5. Then, the A’s were swept in San Francisco — dropping the opener 9-1 before losing consecutive one-run games. Monday’s loss to the Angels was the club’s third one run loss in a row. 2-8 over their last 10, the A’s are now 6.0 GB of Seattle.

21. Milwaukee Brewers (23-25)

Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

It’s been a slog thus far for the Brewers. The perennial NL Central contenders recently endured a 2-7 stretch before winning on Sunday and Monday. Stars Christian Yelich and Jackson Chourio each have an OPS below .675. The starting rotation has pitched rather well, but the bullpen has not been trustworthy. As a result, the Brew Crew have hovered around .500 the entire season. The team can make a run if the lineup gets hot, but Milwaukee doesn’t look like the team to beat in the Central for the first time in a long time.

22. Toronto Blue Jays (22-24)

Nick Turchiaro-Imagn Images

Toronto is still within reach of the Yankees in the AL East, but its play has not generated much excitement North of the border. Two weekends ago, the Jays climbed back to .500 after an impressive sweep in Seattle. The Jays returned to Toronto for a nine-game homestand and they failed to keep the good vibes going. Toronto went 1-2 against the Rays to start the week and proceeded to go 1-2 against the Tigers, as well. Now, the Padres are coming to town. The Jays cannot afford to lose another series at home.

23. Tampa Bay Rays (21-26)

Nathan Ray Seebeck-Imagn Images

Kevin Cash doesn’t appear to have a team that will contend for a postseason spot this year. Cash and the Rays have had a ton of success together despite the limitations that the franchise faces, but this team appears to be simply average compared to previous editions. Tampa started the year 4-1 but hasn’t been above .500 since it dropped to 4-5. Jonathan Aranda is the only man performing at the plate, and Drew Rasmussen has been the lone bright spot in the starting rotation.

24. Los Angeles Angels (21-25)

Dennis Lee-Imagn Images

Well, well, well. How about those Angels? After a 9-5 start, the Halos found themselves with a 16-23 record entering play last week. Two more losses in San Diego dropped the club a season-low eight games below .500. Then, Orange County’s team waltzed into Dodger Stadium and swept the defending champs. It was a shockingly impressive display as the Angels scored 23 runs in the three games. On Monday, Ron Washington’s team extended their winning streak to four with a 4-3 win over the A’s. As a result of the four-game streak, the Angels are 6.0 GB of Seattle.

25. Washington Nationals (21-27)

Gregory Fisher-Imagn Images

The Nationals had an encouraging start to the year. A young team with zero expectations, the Nats were 17-19 on May 6 following a win over Cleveland in the first game of a double-header. However, Washington would proceed to go 1-8 over its next nine games to fall well behind the contenders in the NL East. The last three losses of that stretch came early last week against Atlanta. Despite their poor form, the Nats played with intensity over the weekend against the Orioles. Washington swept the disappointing O’s and now have a good opportunity to test themselves with the Braves and Giants coming to town this week.

26. Miami Marlins (19-27)

Sam Navarro-Imagn Images

Miami may be coming back to life following its horrendous stretch of play. At one time, the Marlins were 12-13 after winning four-of-five games. Then, the club went 3-13 to plummet to the depths of the NL East. The Marlins began last week by going 1-2 at Wrigley, but they ended the week on a high note after avoiding the sweep. Facing the Rays back at home, Miami won 2-of-3 to claim their first series since April 21-23. The good times kept rolling on Monday, as the Marlins walked-off the Cubs.

27. Baltimore Orioles (15-31)

Jeff Hanisch-Imagn Images

In 2019, Brandon Hyde inherited a Baltimore team that had finished 47-115 the year prior. The O’s continued to struggle in Hyde’s first three years (54-108, 25-35, 52-110), but the first-time manager eventually got things rolling in Baltimore. 83 wins in 2022 were followed by 101 wins and an AL East title in ’23, and 91 wins and a second playoff appearance in a row last season. Now, with Baltimore mired in a miserable start to the season, Hyde is without a job. The Orioles fired Hyde after a 15-28 start and they are 0-3 since his dismissal — not exactly the response the front office was hoping for.

28. Chicago White Sox (14-34)

David Banks-Imagn Images

The White Sox won two series in a row! First, Chicago went 2-1 against Miami two weekends ago. To start last week, the Sox won the first two games of a three-game set in Cincinnati to secure their second series in a row. A three-game winning streak and two series wins in a row? The Pope had to be thrilled. Well, the Sox were dealt a reality check over the weekend. Traveling across to town to take on the Cubs, the Sox were throttled throughout the three-game sweep. In total, the Southsiders were outscored 27-8.

29. Pittsburgh Pirates (15-32)

Kyle Ross-Imagn Images

Pittsburgh has not been above .500 this season. The closest the club has come to breaking the .500 threshold is when it was 1-1 after two games. How bad have things been? Paul Skenes boasts a 2.44 ERA and a 0.94 WHIP…and the Pirates are 3-7 in the 10 games he has started. This team is a mess.

30. Colorado Rockies (8-39)

Isaiah J. Downing-Imagn Images

The Pirates may be a mess, but at least they aren’t the Rockies. Colorado is 8-39 on the year, and it is becoming more and more likely that they will push last year’s White Sox for the worst record in MLB history. The Rockies went 1-5 last week. Their lone win was a 14-12 slobber knocker in which they overcame a 11-6 deficit in Arizona.
